The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which functions to save the United Kingdom's small music venues.

He was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped venues that were facing possible closure due to issues stemming from floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted funding support in upgrading infrastructure and gear that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from performances in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

He is far from the only musician to donate his award funds to charitable organizations.

Back when the band earned the award in 1996 for their record the album, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would contribute their winnings to the organization the charity.

During 2002, artist the artist divided her prize between several charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

Two years ago, the band gave their prize money to the local youth club that supported their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also winners that year M People donated their award to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," stated vocalist the singer. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of local spots in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
